Bergen, the Gateway to the Fjords

I step foot in Bergen for the first time, greeted by a fine drizzle, because no matter the season, it often rains in Bergen, even in the middle of summer. But here, water in all its forms—snow, rain, sea, lakes, rivers—is part of the scenery and the very soul of the city.

First day in Bergen, set to the rhythm of cobblestone streets.

Much of the city’s charm comes from the fact that it has preserved its architecture and urban character of yesteryear. It is a delight to get lost in its cobblestone alleys, lined with wooden-fronted houses, each more colorful than the last. The craft shops alone are worth the visit. The quirky wooden staircases and sculptures dotting the city are all sights not to be missed. Some facades lean so much you would think they are about to collapse, yet they have stood like this for centuries. A stroll along the harbor lets you take in the ever-lively atmosphere. There is nothing like ending the day at the fish market, savoring a steaming bowl of fish soup in front of the gently swaying boats.

Day 2: Discovering Mount Fløyen

he Fløibanen funicular takes me to the summit of Mount Fløyen. From up there, you can see Bergen spreading out in vibrant colors, set between the sea and the mountains. A short walk along forest paths, beside peaceful little lakes. Here, the air is remarkably pure and crisp. In the evening, the cobbled streets light up, leaving nothing left to do but pick a restaurant… seafood, of course !

Day 3: Heading for the fjords

We set sail from Bergen aboard a ferry to discover the famous fjords. The boat glides across waters that shift from dark to turquoise, yet remain smooth as a mirror. The towering cliffs gradually draw near, covered in waterfalls—some so fine they look like silver threads. When the boat cuts its engines, the silence is awe-inspiring. Deep inside the fjords, the isolated villages look straight out of another world, remarkably colorful and nestled at the water’s edge at the foot of the cliffs. We spend the night in one of them.

Day 4: Wonder in the Nærøyfjord

This day reveals the Nærøyfjord, one of the narrowest and most spectacular fjords. Around every bend, a new scene unfolds: isolated farms clinging to the mountainside, deep green water, steep peaks. In the evening, the low-angled light transforms the mountains into golden giants.

Day 5: Scenic train and villages

Today we’ll spend the day aboard the famous Flåm Railway. The journey is pure enchantment: roaring waterfalls, steep valleys, tunnels carved into the rock. At every stop, you can take time to chat with the locals—discreet, yet warm and welcoming. You can feel their deep connection to the surrounding nature. Mind you, living here year-round, you almost have to be, as the villages are as stunning as they are isolated.

Day 6: Hiking and exceptional views

Calling all outdoor enthusiasts, there’s nothing like a hike high above the fjords to take in their full beauty. You’ll burn a few calories, but the reward is well worth it: a bird’s-eye view of the water, clouds clinging to the peaks, and with a bit of luck, rainbows that seem to spring right out of the fjord.

Day 7: Return to Bergen

Back in Bergen, just enough time to do some quick shopping before heading off to the airport, our heads filled with the raw beauty of Nordic landscapes.
